Musculoskeletal system

Have fun moving!

Movement is as much a part of life as eating and drinking. What our head thinks and decides is translated into action by our locomotor system. Brain and extremities are a well-coordinated team.

Movement is the be-all and end-all

The health benefits of movement

Movement enables basic needs to be met, emotions to be expressed, tasks to be completed and mobility to be achieved. No matter what the action, young or old, movement is always essential. However, it has more than an external effect, it also has an internal effect, because it increases blood circulation, stimulates lymph flow and metabolism, reduces fat deposits and builds muscles, stabilizes the immune system and the psyche. Anyone who does not move for a long time feels noticeably unwell and unbalanced.

Restricted movement

Being restricted in movement not only means having to do without sports, but also everyday things are difficult to manage. Acute bone fractures in the arms or legs, for example, can paralyze the entire daily routine for a certain period of time. Every movement becomes a torture if a joint or tendon is inflamed.

What you should know

Musculoskeletal disorders are among the most common chronic
diseases in Germany.

Those affected and their relatives suffer a considerable burden, as they can severely impair physical functioning and thus participation in activities of daily living

The most common joint disease worldwide is osteoarthritis.

The degenerative changes in the joints begin with slowly progressive damage to the articular cartilage, which can extend to exposure of the bone. Adjacent muscles and ligaments may also be affected. With age, the risk of developing osteoarthritis increases, while women are more frequently affected than men.

Exercise and nutrients

In addition to regular exercise, the correct supply of nutrients to the body is of great importance for the musculoskeletal system.

Exercise is often neglected in everyday life. Yet exercise is very important for bones, joints and muscles. To prevent painful wear and tear or inflammation of the musculoskeletal system in the first place, certain preventive measures should be taken.

Tips for strengthening and protecting the joints:

  • Regular exercise. Find the right workout e.g. swimming, Nordic walking or gymnastics (the range of health courses is very large and is partly covered by health insurance)
  • Sitting correctly (when sitting for a long time, the spine should be in its physiological shape)
  • Paying attention to body weight (the optimum weight can be calculated using the body mass index (BMI))
  • The right nutrients (our joints are supplied with important nutrients, so it is very important to supply these to the body)

Vitamin C, zinc, copper and selenium are nutrients known to have a positive effect on the musculoskeletal system.

Support and movement system

Movement is an interplay of bones, joints and muscles. The skeleton (passive musculoskeletal system) gives the body its form and support. The skeleton is moved with the help of the skeletal muscles (active musculoskeletal system).

  • Passive musculoskeletal system: Bones, joints, ligaments, cartilage, intervertebral discs
  • Active musculoskeletal system: Muscles, tendons, fascias, bursa

The musculoskeletal system of the human body includes all structures that ensure that we can stand upright and move around.

As with all systems of the body, the locomotor system hides a masterpiece, a mechanical one, consisting of over 200 bones, 140 joints, as well as countless tendons and ligaments. Tendons transmit the activity of the muscles to the bones, ligaments stabilize the joints while they are in use.

What you should know

As of February 2021

Musculoskeletal disorders are the biggest cause of persistent pain and functional limitations.

  • Around a quarter of all Germans suffer from functional limitations of the musculoskeletal system
  • Around 10 million people have clinically manifest, chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system that require treatment
  • Almost seven million people have severe chronic back pain
  • Around five million show symptomatic arthrosis
  • 1.5 million people – two percent of the adult population suffer from inflammatory rheumatic diseases
  • In addition, there are about 20,000 children with rheumatic diseases
  • According to American data, the lifetime risk for an inflammatory rheumatic disease is estimated at around 8% for women and 5% for men

The term ‘musculoskeletal diseases’ is used to describe inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

When joints become inflamed

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory joint disease caused by misdirected immune processes. The disease is progressive and episodic. Joints then become severely swollen and painful.

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones, whereby the fracture strength decreases due to deterioration of the bone structure and bone fractures can occur when even only a small amount of force is applied. The female sex in particular and a genetic predisposition are relevant risk factors here.

Evaluations show that Germans could become much more active in order to cope with increasing life expectancy and to grow old while staying healthy and fit. Moderate, regular exercise and the right supply of nutrients seem to be the key to success here.
