Supplement after donation!
Each blood donation leads to a loss of around 250 mg of iron. A study of 215 test subjects showed that the Hb value drops by an average of 1.3-1.4 g/dL after blood donation. If no iron supplementation is given, it takes an average of 158 days for donors with a ferritin <27ng/mL to reach 80% of the initial Hb value.
Targeted iron supplementation can cover the increased requirement and thus support the recovery phase. However, gastrointestinal complaints often lead to poor compliance. Organically bound iron compounds such as ferrous gluconate, ferrous fumarate and ferrous bisglycinate are characterized by exceptionally high bioavailability and optimal tolerability. The additional intake of vitamin C further improves absorption.
This means that nothing stands in the way of longer-term substitution therapy. This also applies to groups of people who have an increased risk of developing an iron deficiency. Particularly at risk are vegans/vegetarians, menstruating women, athletes and senior citizens.
